Family Practice & Urgent Care: in Virginia Beach for Over 50 Years
First Colonial Family Practice was established in 1970. As one of the area’s most established independent private practices, we are dedicated to providing the highest level of ongoing medical care to the members of our community.
In the mid to late 1960s, there was a severe shortage of general practitioners across Virginia. Seeing an opportunity to better serve our community, two Virginia Beach physician groups — Drs. Charlton, Mapp and Mayo and Drs. Stallings and Burt — came together and created First Colonial Family Practice. They built the new office at our current location on First Colonial Road, right next to the newly constructed Virginia Beach General Hospital.
Around the same time, the specialty of Family Practice was developing across the country. The Medical College of Virginia was among the first to create a Department of Family Practice. First Colonial Family Practice’s own Dr. Mayo became the first chairman of the new department.
First Colonial Family Practice became one of five Family Practice models under the guidance of the Medical College of Virginia. With that, our practice served as a combination of private practice and Family Practice teaching program, training medical Residents.
From 1974 to 1987, First Colonial Family Practice trained and graduated 75 family physicians. Thirty-five percent of those trained stayed in Virginia, and 20 percent stayed in Virginia Beach — many of them are practicing today. First Colonial Family Practice takes great pride in the contributions we made to training outstanding young physicians in the specialty of Family Practice.
Conveniently located on First Colonial Road in Virginia Beach, we serve patients from all over our community and surrounding areas. We are independently owned and operated and take great pride in being the physicians of choice for generations of Virginia and North Carolina families.
